Aglaonema, also known as “Kaew Kanchana” or “Chinese Evergreen,” is a genus of ornamental plants renowned for their beautiful leaves, earning them the title “King of Ornamental Plants.” The English name “Aglaonema” has Greek roots, with “aglaos” meaning “light” or “brightness” and “nema” meaning “thread.” Various Thai species have been given auspicious names that symbolize good fortune, such as “Kwok Maha Mongkol,” “Balang Thapthim” (Ruby Throne), “Balang Thong” (Golden Throne), and “Yok Kanchana” (Jade Kanchana).

One of the key features of this plant is its succulent nature. It has thick, fibrous roots underground, and its above-ground stem is segmented, either upright or creeping. The plant has single leaves that spiral around the stem, with a variety of shapes, patterns, and colors. Ongoing hybridization efforts have focused on creating vibrant colors, with most hybrids selected for their small size, short leaf stems, compact form, disease resistance, and ability to thrive in low-light environments, making them ideal as potted plants.

Aglaonema should be planted in locations where it can receive morning sunlight or under the partial shade of large trees. It should not be grown in overly shaded areas, as this can cause the plant to become tall and leggy. The soil should remain moist but not overly wet. Propagation can be done by stem cuttings or separating clusters. Studies have shown that Aglaonema is highly effective at absorbing formaldehyde from the air, which has led to its growing popularity as an indoor plant or garden ornament. It also boasts a wide variety of leaf shapes, patterns, and colors.
